How To Strategically Select Your Paint Colors & Finishes At The Same Time

Whether you’re selecting finishes for your remodeling project or for your new build; you need to keep in mind that all of the important finishes are selected simultaneously because you can see all of the finishes together and change out what is not working.

Selecting finishes and paint colors separately can become a very costly mistake. The colors of the finishes can either be too dominant and make the other subsequent choices difficult to work with. Working with an interior designer who is well-versed in this area is your best friend for this portion of your project. Many work with clients to help just with selecting finishes and you will have a beautiful and seamless design.

Step #1: Settle on a Specific Mood for the Space

The first step is to determine how you want your space to feel and most importantly how you want it to serve you. How would you like to feel when you walk into your home?

What’s your vibe, soft light and cozy or dark, moody & comfortable or clean, or polished and luxurious?

Step #2: Find a Variety of Images for Visual Inspiration

Once you have settled on a mood or vibe, you can now begin looking for inspiration for your space(s) or home. Great places to search for inspiration are Pinterest or magazines that portray the style you want your home to have. A great exercise would be to have notes made about each of the inspirational photographs, and what you like about them.

Step #3: Determine Each Detail of the Design Up-Front

You know what you want your space to feel like and have collected inspirational photographs and know what it is that you like about them. Now comes the most important part. You need to truly have the finishes for creating the look your want for your space(s) or home. This is where I can be of assistance and use my resources to create your home the way you want it. We will have a couple of meetings to develop the look and feel you have envisioned for your home. All finish samples and paint color samples will be gathered and curated in different color and finish combinations.

Step #4: Edit, Assess, Repeat, Finalize...Then Implement

We will look at a few different combinations of finishes and paint color choices until you are in love with the end result and we will then finalize the design. You will be presented with the final choices of finishes for approval and then the ordering and procurement begin and will roll into the implementation phase.

Always remember that when you select finishes and match them to paint color choices, you want to pick the best neutral color that ties all of the finishes together. The larger paint samples can help you see which neutral color best works with the colors in your countertop and then you test it with other finishes, cabinets, backsplash, and flooring. You can order your large paint samples to test with your existing finishes.
